Youth and Student Service Opportunities
While the minimum age for volunteering at the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland is 13, there are still many meaningful ways for kids to contribute and make a positive impact for the animals at the ARLGP!
Student Community Service
Due to the training and time investment required for each of our volunteers, we are unable to offer in-shelter volunteering for community service hours.
For students seeking community service opportunities outside of the shelter, we can provide service verification letters or complete school forms for any of the service opportunities below.
Just be sure to track your hours with this sheet and bring it with you when you drop off your donations or DIY projects. Any Animal Refuge League staff member can sign the DIY service log for up to 10 hours each month.
Students in need of more than 10 hours of community service credit in a month must have their project approved by the ARLGP volunteer management team in advance. Please email any questions to volunteer@arlgp.org.
Do-It-Yourself Toy & Enrichment Packets
You can help provide comfort and enrichment to the animals in our care by completing a volunteer project from home. Just download one of our DIY packets to get started!
Donation Drives
A donation drive is a great way for individuals, businesses, schools, clubs and other groups to collect donations for our shelter. Check out our donation drive toolkit for tips and resources on holding your donation drive.
When you’re done, we want to make a big deal of your support! We’d love to welcome you to the ARLGP to drop off your donations and take a picture to share on our social media. Collected items can be dropped off at the Animal Refuge League during regular business hours.

Foster Care
Temporarily care for pets in your home! This family service opportunity helps get animals in need of individualized care, treatment, or training into the homes of community members while they rest and recuperate outside of the shelter. Food and supplies are provided. The main caregiver must be 18 years of age or older. Earn three service hours per day, per foster pet.
Humane Education Programming
At the ARLGP, we believe that in teaching our community kids at a young age to be responsible pet guardians and advocates, we are ensuring animals will be humanely treated and cared for well into the future.
