He arrived to the ARLGP the end of last January from our Puerto Rico rescue partner, All Sato Rescue. Did you know Puerto Rico shelters have a 99% euthanasia rate? Yes, you read that correctly, 99%. And as a mostly blind and deaf dog, Sumac’s trip to the ARLGP literally saved his life. However, as a mostly blind and deaf dog with special needs, we knew it would take a bit longer to find Sumac a family ready and equipped to provide him with everything he needed to be happy and healthy.
We loved everything about this boy. He would light up when he saw a shadow of a person at his kennel. He would break out into full body wiggles at just the thought of human interaction. He loved every minute of his time with us: every walk, every snuggle session, every new toy (and there were lots!). We gave him all the love and attention we could, just because we knew how much it meant to him (and we loved to see him smile).
In July we put out a plea to our community: help us find Sumac his family. After 7 months exactly, we found it. We are so happy to honor Sumac today, on Christmas, as our #1 save of the year and to report to you – the community that helped us find him his new beginning – that he is as amazing as we remember, but now in a home to call his own:
“We knew he was the one when I saw how gentle he was when we met him, I instantly fell in love! Sumac has changed our lives because it gave Kennedy (my daughter) a best friend. He sleeps at her feet so she doesn’t move and lets her play with his toys too. He is doing amazing! This Christmas will be special because we get to celebrate with him and he loves opening presents! Kennedy and I are so grateful that we met Sumac and fell in love. We don’t even remember what it was like without him!
With love– Nicole, Kennedy and Sumac”
We might be shedding a few happy tears over here, as we think about the impact this special boy had on our lives for 7 months. It means the world to know he is safe, happy and loved.
From all of us here at the ARLGP, we thank each and every adopter of 2017. While we look back on a few special stories, in all honesty, each adoption leaves a paw print in our hearts. We feel immensely proud to place 4,000 animals into new, loving homes in this amazingly supportive community. We mean it when we say: we couldn’t do it without you.
From our ARLGP family to yours—happiest holidays!
