UPDATE 2/22/10
Buka was adopted by a busy family with young children in residence, and has been returned because it proved too difficult to manage her strict diet under the circumstances. She’s been doing well on a grain-free dog food containing fish, but Buka needs someone whose family situation is quiet enough to prevent her from counter surfing and helping little kids eat their snacks. Buka is housebroken. She remains friendly, high-energy, and eager, and is seeking a home with active people who will offer her plenty of physical and mental exercise, and conscientious management of her diet. A home with another active large dog may be a great match.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buka is a 2-year-old black lab who isn’t looking her best right at the moment, but will be a stunner once she gets her health and her coat back. She was certainly having a bad hair day when she arrived here two weeks ago with a longstanding case of demodex mange, and she still has the oily, flaky coat and hairless patches that are characteristic of the condition. She’s been receiving medical treatment and special baths for the mange. We’ve also put her on a limited ingredient diet specifically for allergic dogs, since a low immune system due to allergies often allows other conditions to get a foot in the door. Buka didn’t find herself in this condition overnight, so it will take a little more time to set her right again, but once her mange is gone and her new hypoallergenic diet established she’ll soon be the gorgeous girl she was meant to be. Buka’s former owner tells us that she loves other dogs, slept in a pile with the family cats, and adored the child she lived with. She’s a high-energy, friendly, eager girl, and all she wants is an active family so she can once more be a loving, and loved, pet.
